Cabins are clean, modern, and reasonably sized, with ample closet space and a large bathroom. The ship almost always feels uncrowded, with plenty of places to tuck away, including the upper level of the Explorer’s Lounge and the atrium area. Warnemünde is a charming, small, seaside town, popular for its large sandy beaches. So, as soon as we could leave the ship, we walked the short distance into town.
Helsinki, Finland

Hailed as the city of Aquavit, a herb-infused tipple enjoyed by Scandinavians since the 15th century, Alborg is a great destination for the epicurean. Famed for having the highest concentration of 17th and 18th-century wooden buildings in Europe, the southern port town of Stavanger is both beautiful and fascinating. For people who wish to explore a destination on their own, the complimentary tours are an excellent way to get your bearings. Or, for those who want to experience more, an excellent introduction or addition to the more extensive tours. Join us as we explore the world in search of memorable travel experiences.
Helsinki: A young capital city with a cool vibe
It also offers outside seating on the waterfront side of the restaurant. We then decided to take a walk around the waterfront and catch some of the sights we had seen from the ship several days earlier when we were arriving in port. Again, the weather was nice and we enjoyed taking in all of the sights. Arriving in Oslo around 3 PM, it was an easy guided walk to our hotel, the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel.
Day 9 ─ Berlin, Germany
If this is your first visit to the German capital, don’t miss the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate and Alexanderplatz. Since you’ll spend two days and one night in this glorious city, you’ll have time for a concert or theater show, as well as a visit to the sensational Hermitage, one of the world’s greatest art museums. The latter is an absolute must-visit landmark in St. Petersburg, one of Europe’s top cultural attractions, in fact. A day in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is a day filled with walking on cobbled streets and admiring marvelous historic buildings. Highlights abound here, including the stunning Temppeliaukio Church, the iconic 13-domed Uspenski Cathedral, and Suomeninna Fortress, one of the largest maritime strongholds in the world.
Greenland, Iceland, Norway & Beyond
We planned a lot of activities on Day 2, so after dinner we just relaxed and got a good night’s sleep. If you would like information regarding life on board one of a Viking’s Ocean ships, we cover those details at the beginning of our previous article, Iceland’s Natural Beauty – A Viking Ocean Cruise. Plenty to do in each port, but you will need to dish out some extra cash for experiences. For eating and drinking outside traditional meal hours, you can head to The Viking Living Room and Viking Bar on Deck 1.

Walk the streets, admire the colorful facades, browse the many stores, and pose for a photo in Mårten Trotzigs alley, the narrowest street in Stockholm. Enjoy great people watching at Stortorget, the oldest square in Stockholm. The Senate Square, which contains the pristine white Helsinki Cathedral with its unique green domes, is a great place to spend some time. The cathedral and most of the other buildings around the square were designed by Carl Engel. Step inside the cathedral to admire the bright interior decorated very simply and elegantly.

Review: Onboard the Viking Jupiter – Amenities, Activities, Entertainment, & ‘The Scene’
As Berlin is nowhere near the coast, a private train from the port of Warnemunde near Rostock was arranged to take us inland to Berlin. Being so far from the coast; a day in Berlin was going to be a big undertaking no matter how you looked at it. Michelin starred restaurants sit side by side hip, edgy cafes and bike-friendly streets weave through the royal palaces.
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is beautiful outside, with the multicolored onion domes. It is equally stunning inside, with every inch of wall and ceiling covered with colorful frescoes. The ride on the St. Petersburg metro and the boat cruise were fun. Admire the onion domes and beautiful architecture of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

The city of Bergen is nestled in the midst of seven towering mountains, and a visit to the top of a mountain should definitely be on your list of things to do. Take the cute Fløibanen funicular to the top of Mt. Fløyen, or the cable car to the top of Mt. Ulriken. Either mountain top will give you beautiful panoramic views of the city and the mountains and water beyond. Itinerary and shore excursions are subject to change and may vary by departure.
Although, we believe Helsinki could be enjoyed over a few days to fully reap the rewards of what the city has to offer. Also, independent travel in Russia requires a visa, so DIY exploration is not an option. Cruise ship passengers on short visits are exempt from this visa requirement provided all tours and sightseeing are undertaken with an organised group and guide.
It’s not all a cobblestone maze of historic preservation meets urban gentrification though. You feel compelled to stay outdoors and enjoy the gardens and parks. A two-hour bus ride around the streets of St Petersburg with only a few quick photos stops at some of the lesser viewpoints, missing some of St Petersburg’s highlights.
All of the museums were very interesting and we would recommend this excursion. The third museum co-located in the same area, is the Norwegian Maritime Museum. The Norwegian Maritime Museum is a nationwide museum responsible for collecting, researching and disseminating maritime heritage and coastal culture. Ålborg is a very easy town to navigate with many interesting places to explore.
A walking tour of the town which included an interlude with some dubious looking Vikings and a sample of ham smoked for six years gave us our bearings for further exploration. Our Scandinavia itineraries offer unrivaled cultural and culinary diversity. Discover the world’s most beautiful and historic cities, from Stockholm to Bergen. Under the midnight sun in the summer, Viking shows you colorful cities, quaint wooden houses and cascading waterfalls. With one day in Stockholm, focus on three or four things that you really want to do, and leave the rest for a longer visit. Start with the Vasa Museum, where you can view the salvaged ship that sank on its maiden voyage.
Viking recently added two new, 378-passenger expedition cruise vessels specifically built to travel to the White Continent. Viking Osiris is the first of four sister ships that Viking plans to launch on the Nile by 2025 as it doubles its footprint in Egypt. The vessels offer a clean-lined, Scandinavian-influenced design that mimics the look of Viking's Europe-based vessels. Among the line's voyages, there's everything from eight-day cruises in the Mediterranean to 138-day around-the-world voyages.
